Whether it’s His Holiness The Dalai Lama who very simply, yet profoundly said “The purpose of our lives is to be happy” or The Partridge Family who sang their hearts out, urging a generation to “C’mon get happy!” our desire and subsequent quest for this thing called happiness is universal.

Yet, very few people are living a life that truly makes them happy. Many are not even asking themselves this vital question and others are living a life based on what they think should make them happy, not what really does.

The word “happy” makes it sound so simple, yet often the process of figuring out who we are and what really makes us happy can feel esoteric and elusive.

I remember friends in college who talked about needing to go out West to “find themselves.” I always wondered what that meant. For a long time I imagined the west coast littered with large groups of long-haired, barefoot people,in flowing outfits walking in circles looking down and chanting, “Where am I?” I’m not sure if they ever found out.

Something told me this was not quite how I was going to “find myself”. For one thing, I look much better in tailored clothing. And I didn’t feel lost as much as I just wanted to be happy and do what I was here to do in the world, though at the time I had no idea what that meant or what it looked like.

I later realized that it wasn’t about “finding myself.” I’ve been here all along. It was about creating a healthy relationship with myself, just like I would with a close friend or partner.  It was about acknowledging and celebrating my natural gifts that already existed within me and bringing them to life in my personal and professional life.  And it was about trusting that deep down I already knew what made me happy.  I just had to listen to it.  And thankfully, I did.

Now it’s your turn and I’m here to help.

What you find may surprise you.
